How to rank in ChatGPT, and why that is the wrong question

By Chris JohnsPublished 20 August 20268 minute read
The short answer

You cannot rank in ChatGPT, because ChatGPT does not rank anything. There is no position one, no results page, and no index you can climb. The assistant either mentions your business or it does not. That is the whole scoreboard.

Key takeaways
  • There is no ranking, so the real question is whether you get named.
  • That splits into three separate problems: findability, understanding, and trust.
  • Conventional search visibility is the entry requirement, not an alternative.
  • You can check where you stand yourself, this week, at no cost.

Once you accept that, the question becomes answerable: what makes a business likely to be named, and what can you actually influence? Short version: be findable in conventional search, be described identically everywhere, be discussed by sources other than yourself, and answer real questions plainly. There is no shortcut, and anyone selling you one is describing something they do not control.

Why the question is worth reframing

When someone asks an assistant "who should I hire for X in Boise," the assistant does not consult a leaderboard. In most current products it runs a live web search, reads a handful of results, and writes an answer naming a few options.

So the real question is not how to rank. It is: when the assistant goes looking, does it find you, does it understand you, and does it trust you enough to put your name in front of a stranger? Those are three different problems.

Three problems, three different fixes
ProblemWhat it depends onCost to fix
Does it find youConventional search visibility and crawler accessModerate, and unglamorous
Does it understand youIdentical business facts in every place you appearCheapest thing on the list
Does it trust youOther people discussing you, not just your own siteHighest, and slowest

Problem one: does it find you?

Live retrieval reads the web. If you are not visible in conventional search results for the topic, you are unlikely to be retrieved. This is the part people skip because it is unglamorous. Conventional search visibility is not an alternative to AI visibility. It is the entry requirement.

Also check your robots file. ChatGPT’s search crawler is governed separately from its training crawler, so a site can block retrieval by accident while intending only to opt out of training. This is a common and entirely self inflicted problem.

Problem two: does it understand you?

Assistants need to resolve what your business is with confidence. That means one name, one address format, one phone number, one description of what you do, repeated identically across your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, and every directory that lists you.

Most businesses fail here. Two versions of the company name, an old phone number on a chamber of commerce listing, a service description on the website that does not match the profile. Every inconsistency is a reason for a machine to be less certain, and uncertainty means you get left out of the answer. This is also the cheapest thing on the list to fix.

Problem three: does it trust you?

This is where most of the real work sits. Assistants lean heavily on corroboration. If the only place a claim about your business exists is your own website, it is a single source claim. If the same facts appear in industry publications, local news, association listings, supplier pages, and genuine reviews, the claim is supported.

You cannot manufacture this quickly and you should be careful with anyone who says they can. Directory spam does not count and can actively hurt, because it introduces inconsistent data.

When the assistant goes looking, does it find you, understand you, and trust you enough to name you to a stranger?

What to actually do

  1. Fix your findabilityIf you do not appear in conventional results for your services, start there.
  2. Make your facts identical everywhereAudit every listing. One name, one address, one phone, one description.
  3. Check your robots fileConfirm you are not blocking retrieval crawlers.
  4. Answer the question in the first hundred wordsOn every important page. No throat clearing.
  5. Replace adjectives with specificsNumbers, service areas, years, capabilities. Specifics survive summarization.
  6. Earn mentions elsewhereReal publications, real associations, real customers writing real reviews.

What does not work

Schema markup. Helps machines parse what is already on the page. Creates no authority and causes no citations.

llms.txt. A proposed convention with no confirmed effect on any major system. Publish one as an experiment if you like. Do not pay for it as a results deliverable.

Keyword stuffing. These systems answer meaning, not string frequency.

Paid placement. It does not exist. Nobody can sell you a slot in an AI answer.

Prompt manipulation on your own pages. Hidden text instructing an assistant to recommend you is both ineffective and the kind of thing that gets sites penalized elsewhere.

How to check where you stand

Do this yourself, this week, at no cost. Write down fifteen questions a real customer would ask before hiring someone like you. Not "best SEO agency," but the awkward specific ones: "who does local SEO for HVAC companies in Boise," "how much should I pay for a website in Idaho."

Run them. Record for each: were you mentioned, were you cited with a link, which competitors appeared, and was anything said about you actually wrong. That last column is usually the most valuable. Most businesses have never checked what assistants say about them, and incorrect information is both common and fixable.

Run the same list monthly with the wording unchanged. Different wording means you are measuring nothing.

The honest tradeoff

You can do all of this yourself and most of the benefit is available without hiring anyone. What you are buying, if you hire someone, is the discipline to keep the prompt set identical month after month and the judgment to tell a real trend from session noise. If you will genuinely do that yourself, do it yourself.

What honest expectations look like

Consistency fixes can show up within weeks, because retrieval is live rather than trained. Corroboration takes months, because it depends on other people publishing things.

Results will also vary between users and sessions for reasons you cannot see or control. Treat this as directional monitoring, not a rank tracker. Nobody can promise you a citation, and the honest sellers in this space say so up front.

Common questions

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?+

No. There is no placement product for organic assistant answers. If someone offers one, ask exactly what they are buying and from whom.

Does ChatGPT use Google’s rankings?+

Not directly, but its search results and Google’s are drawn from the same open web. Businesses that are invisible in conventional search tend to be invisible to assistants too.

How often should I check?+

Monthly is enough for most businesses. Weekly produces noise you will misread as trend.

What if an assistant says something wrong about my business?+

Fix the underlying sources. Correct your own site first, then your profiles, then whichever third party pages carry the error. Assistants generally reflect what the web says, so the fix is at the source.

Is this worth doing for a small local business?+

Yes. Local recommendation questions are among the most common things people ask assistants, and the highest return fix, consistent business information, costs nothing but attention.
