Most of the clicks you have lost to zero click results were never going to become customers. The losses that matter are on commercial queries where the answer box satisfies someone who would otherwise have contacted you. Triage by query type rather than panicking at a traffic chart.
What a zero click search actually is
A zero click search is one where the person gets what they needed from the results page and never visits a site. Featured snippets did this first. AI overviews do it far more comprehensively, because they answer the whole question rather than quoting one paragraph.
The reaction is usually to treat every lost click as lost revenue. That is wrong, and it leads to spending money defending queries that were never worth anything.
Three kinds of query, three different answers
Queries you should be happy to lose
What time do you close. What is your phone number. How many inches in a foot. Somebody getting that answer instantly is a good outcome, and the click would have been a bounce. If your hours are answered in the results, that is your Business Profile working.
Queries that are genuinely neutral
Broad definitional questions. What is local SEO. These bring traffic that rarely converts for a local service business. Losing them costs you a number on a chart and very little else.
Queries where the loss is real
Anything with a decision behind it. What does this cost, who should I hire, is this worth it, what goes wrong. If an overview answers those without naming you, a buyer has just finished their research without ever meeting you. That is the loss worth working on.
The question is not how many clicks you lost. It is whether the people who stopped clicking were ever going to call.
What to do about the queries that matter
- Be the cited source rather than the missing one. If the overview is going to answer the question anyway, the goal is to be where it got the answer.
- Answer the decision questions specifically enough that a summary cannot replace you. A range, a condition, a named trade-off survives summarization. A generic paragraph does not.
- Put the things a summary cannot carry on the page: your process, your availability, the specific circumstances where you are the wrong choice.
- Make the next step obvious for the fraction who do click. Fewer visitors with higher intent changes what a page needs to do.
Impressions holding steady while clicks fall is not always failure. It can mean you are being shown for more questions and satisfying more of them. Judge it by contacts, not by click rate.
How to measure it honestly
- In Search Console, list the queries where impressions rose and clicks fell over the last two quarters.
- Sort them into the three groups above.
- For the third group only, check whether an overview appears and who it cites.
- Rewrite those pages to be the better source for the specific sub-answer, not the broader topic.
- Recheck a quarter later and compare contacts, not clicks.
The part nobody selling this will tell you
Some traffic is not coming back. If your site was built on informational articles that answered questions a machine now answers directly, that model is under real pressure and no amount of optimization restores it.
For a local service business this matters less than the headlines suggest, because your buyers still have to choose a person and make contact. The click was never the valuable part. The call was.
How to triage traffic lost to zero click searches
- In Search Console, list the queries where impressions rose and clicks fell over the last two quarters.
- Sort them into satisfied, neutral, and commercially damaging groups.
- For the damaging group only, check whether an overview appears and who it cites.
- Rewrite those pages to be the better source for the specific sub-answer.
- Recheck a quarter later and compare contacts rather than clicks.
Questions people ask
Are zero click searches killing SEO?
They are changing what SEO is for. Ranking to be summarized is worth less than it was; being the source a summary cites, and being findable when someone is ready to act, is worth more. For local service businesses the change is real but modest.
Should I stop writing informational content?
No, but write less of it and make it more specific. Broad definitional posts are the most exposed. Content built on first-hand detail, local specifics, and judgment calls is the least.
How do I know if an AI overview is taking my clicks?
Look for queries where impressions hold or rise while clicks fall, then search those queries yourself and see whether an overview appears. Search Console does not label overview impressions separately, so the manual check is necessary.
Does appearing in an overview help at all?
It can, through brand exposure and referral clicks from citations, but the traffic is far smaller than a top ranking used to deliver. Treat citation as visibility rather than as traffic.
Is this worse for small businesses or large ones?
Worse for publishers who monetized informational traffic. Roughly neutral for local service businesses, whose buyers still need to contact someone. The businesses hurt most are those whose entire model was answering questions for ad revenue.
What is the single best response?
Move your effort toward the queries that sit closest to a decision, and make those pages more specific than a summary can be. That is the whole strategy.
If you want to know which of your queries are being answered without you, and who is being cited instead, that is the first measurement in the AI visibility work.
